The school season is about to start and you're wondering how you will make this a successful first week and build class community.
Keep reading for some cool suggestions!

PPE Relay - When I did this relay it was a hit! It's a great idea because it involves concepts usually covered at the beginning of the year. Also, you probably have all of the materials.
Supplies:
Masks
Gowns/labcoats
Gloves
Goggles/face shields
Chairs
How to:
Use two sides of your room as the relay space. Two to four students can compete at a time, At the end of the sides set up chairs with PPE on top. Students will race each other from the opposite side to the chairs. The winner is the student who correctly applies the PPE and runs back to the starting mark the fastest!
This is a friendly competition and requires the class to demonstrate that they understand proper donning. Here's a great activity if you need something to review concepts before the relay
If you want to take it up a notch, you can choose the winner as the fastest person to run to the chair, don correctly, run back, AND doff correctly. Feel free to customize the race to your liking.
2. Candy counting - This allows students to practice manually counting pills for patients.
Supplies:
Skittles or M&M's
Counting trays
Small cups or weigh boats
Empty vials
How to:
First, create counting prompts where students are filling different prescription orders. You can write these on the board or type in a Powerpoint. Based on the amount, students can practice skip counting to be quick and effective. Students can even compete against each other to see who fills faster.
3. "About Me" Prescription - Here's a way to put a spin on the traditional "about me" activity
Supplies:
How to:
Have students complete the worksheet by filling in their name, birthday, side effects, fun facts, purpose, and contraindications.
*Side effects: Think about some of your characteristics. List how people feel after interacting with you!
*Purpose: Every medication has a purpose in the body. What do you think your purpose in life is?
*Contraindications: Sometimes patients can’t consume certain foods or medications because it’ll negatively interact with the current medication. List your dislikes and deal-breakers. Deal-breakers can relate to school, work, or personal life.
4. Pass the Vial - This is a way to help the class learn about each other.
Supplies:
Empty vials
Small pieces of paper
How to:
You can even participate! Everyone should write the following on their paper: name, favorite hobby, their best Summer memory, favorite color, and one of their goals. The paper should then be rolled up and inserted into the vial. The teacher can collect the bottles and pass them out randomly or get students to swap.
If you try any of these awesome ideas, please comment and let me know how it went!
